Singapore (April 8): A new chapter in the history of the Faldo Series Asia will be written when the second decade of the junior programme tees-off next week.

Ho Chih Minh City, Vietnam (July 20): An extra spring will be in the step of participants when they line up in this week’s ninth Faldo Series Vietnam Championship.

Spanning 11 months, the 2016-17 Faldo Series Asia season will include a minimum of 21 events in 17 countries including, for the first time, two qualifiers in Thailand.

For the first time, the R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking-counting event, which acts as the sixth leg of the record-breaking 2016-17 Faldo Series Asia campaign, is being held at The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip.

Winners of age-group categories at each of the national championships will earn themselves places in the 11th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, to be hosted by Faldo at Laguna Lang Co in Danang, Vietnam, in March, 2017.

Being staged in conjunction with the first Vietnam Junior Open, the event has attracted a field of 40 of the country’s foremost male and female amateurs.

It will be the first occasion since the Series was launched in 2007 that the Grand Final has been held at a venue other than Mission Hills China.

Additional incentive for age group winners is that the 11th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final is scheduled to take place on ‘home soil’ at Laguna Lang Co in Danang, Vietnam, in March, 2017.

Sir Nick Faldo said: “My sincere thanks go to Mission Hills China for all they have done. We are indebted to the wonderful support we have received, particularly from the late Dr David Chu and also from Ken and Tenniel Chu.

Six-time Major champion Sir Nick Faldo, who will host the Grand Final, said: “Vietnam is one of the world’s emerging golfing nations. New courses are being built and more men, women and children are being encouraged to take up the game by the Vietnam Golf Association.

“As with our European final, it has always been the long-term intention to rotate the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final around the region.

“I’m delighted that the Faldo Series Vietnam Championship is playing a part in the country’s golfing development and am very much looking forward to spending time at Laguna Lang Co for the Grand Final early next year.”

“We are very excited that we are going to Vietnam and the Laguna Lang Co course.  I'm forming a good relationship with Banyan Tree and they are really on board. They are heavily into junior golf and I think we are going to have a super event next year.”

Much of the attention at The Bluffs will focus on Anthony Truong Chi Quan and Nguyen Thao My.

After teeing-off in Chinese-Taipei next week, the Series will wind its way around the region with a visit to Pattaya for the Thailand Championship [North] and then onto the Philippines in May and the Faldo-designed Angkor Golf Resort in Cambodia in June.

Playing at his home course, Truong, Vietnam’s top-rated amateur, competed with distinction alongside the professionals at last year’s inaugural Ho Tram Open and will set out as favourite for the overall title at this week’s 54-hole event.

Two qualifiers in China plus the Hong Kong Championship are slated for July with Laguna Lang Co hosting the Vietnam Championship in August.

Strong challenges are expected from Nguyen Phuong Toan and Truong Quan, both of whom participated in the 10th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at China’s Mission Hills.

September will see the Series head to Pakistan, Singapore, Nepal, Malaysia and Laguna Phuket for the inaugural Faldo Series Thailand Championship [South].

Meanwhile, Nguyen Thao My will be bidding to overshadow the boys by claiming a third successive Faldo Series Vietnam Championship crown.

Bangladesh, Japan and India feature on the schedule in October and November while a bumper field is expect for the second Australian Championship at Sydney’s Castle Hill Country Club the week before Christmas.

In what is being dubbed a ‘Mini Vietnam Amateur Ladies Championship’, all of the country’s top female players are in the starting field, including national team members Hanako Kawasaki and Tran Chieu Duong. Kawasaki and Duong are both past winners of the Girls’ Under-16 category.

In the first month of 2017, events in Indonesia, New Zealand and Kunming will complete the qualifying process.

Supported by The R&A and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the 2016-17 Faldo Series Asia campaign stretches over 11 months.

“Over the coming months it will be exciting to see which Asian players emerge as potential stars of the future,” said Faldo.

As well as two events in China, India and Thailand, championships will be staged in Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.

Supported by The R&A and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the 2016-17 Faldo Series Asia campaign will comprise three events in China, two in India and Thailand and one each in Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.
